NM TradePort™
Pioneering Sustainable Intermodal Development in the BorderPlex Region
Doña Ana County, New Mexico, is at the forefront of revolutionizing cross-border trade and logistics with the NMTradePort, driven by the imperative to create a sustainable, efficient, and innovative inland port that addresses the evolving needs of the 21st-century global economy. The initiative represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and economically vibrant future for the communities and existing industrial footprint, seamlessly integrating clean energy solutions with advanced transportation infrastructure.
The NMTradePort's strategic positioning within the tri-state New Mexico, Texas, and Chihuahua binational economic zone capitalizes on a unique geographic advantage. Proximity to the Santa Teresa Port of Entry, identified for significant expansion and modernization, positions the NMTradePort to become a major gateway of binational trade. The envisioned enhancements to the port of entry would dramatically streamline customs processes, minimize wait times, and optimize overall efficiency, establishing it as the premier crossing point for businesses across North America.
The vision for the NMTradePort leverages this strategic location to create a powerful nexus for international trade, facilitating efficient connections across multiple trade corridors:
• North-South Axis: The project is poised to maximize existing and planned expansions of manufacturing plants in Mexico, ensuring swift and efficient cross-border movement of goods via the Santa Teresa Port of Entry.
• East-West Gateway: The NMTradePort will serve as a crucial intermodal link, facilitating the flow of goods between the bustling Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach and destinations throughout the eastern United States from Houston, New Orleans, and beyond.
• Regional Hub: The position at the US-Mexico border, with direct access to El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, solidifies the NMTradePort’s role as the keystone of regional trade facilitation.
Santa Teresa is home to a growing industrial community. The industrial parks in Santa Teresa currently host over 6 million sqft of commercial space with another 1 million sqft under development. The Union Pacific (UP) Santa Teresa Terminal Intermodal Ramp can accommodate 225,000 units of intermodal lift capacity (expandable to 700,000 units) and has 1,266 stalls for trailer and container parking (expandable to 4,380 stalls). Major exported products currently include computer and electronic products; electrical equipment; appliances and components; fabricated metal products and manufactured food products.
